Hot on the heels of Obama's Labor Day speech - in which he pledged $50 billion for infrastructural development - is the latest edition of Civic Duty. Since FDR began the tradition during the Great Depression, recessions have precipitated large-scale civic building projects. This holds true for the global slump we're currently 'recovering' from: immigration centers, federal research buildings, and schools are in the works all over the world. Just in time for the first day of school, here are our top ten picks for remarkable education design. — By Architizer at 2:28 PM Wed

Now you can attend Zombie 101--although, technically, it's called English 333 at the University of Baltimore. The class will cover 16 zombie movies, from 1932's White Zombie to 2009's Zombieland, and will examine how the character of the zombie has evolved as a reflection of society. That's one class that might have kept me awake. — By adorablenapalm at 1:36 PM Wed

US Infrastructure Report Card: D (http://www.infrastructur)

Yesterday XM Sirius POTUS discussed Infrastructure. One of the callers was a civil engineer who suggested looking at the US Infrastructure Report Card which grade the US on a variety of factors. The 2009 Grades include: Aviation (D), Bridges (C), Dams (D), Drinking Water (D-), Energy (D+), Hazardous Waste (D), Inland Waterways (D-), Levees (D-), Public Parks and Recreation (C-), Rail (C-), Roads (D-), Schools (D), Solid Waste (C+), Transit (D), and Wastewater (D-). Overall, America's Infrastructure GPA was graded a "D." To get to an "A" requires a 5 year infrastructure investment of $2.2 Trillion dollars. Hence, you can understand if I am underwhelmed by the latest $50B proposal. — By ritholtz at 12:55 PM Wed

Boing Boing seems to follow the happenings related to Pirate Bay, so I figured I would share this. Snip from Article: "Police targeted 48 sites in countries including Britain, the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Hungary. Five of the arrests were in Belgium and the others were made in Norway and Sweden. The suspects are the alleged leaders of four illegal file-sharing networks and they have been charged with hacking, piracy and computer fraud. In Sweden, seven premises were raided including PRQ, which is believed to host Pirate Bay and whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks. Police made clear that the raids were unconnected to WikiLeaks." — By fersheezytaco at 12:19 PM Wed

Tibetan Decorated Human Skulls (http://www.boneroom.com/)

"Real Bone - Tibetan Decorated Human Skulls & Skull Caps - The Bone Room just receive a stock of rare Kapalas - Tibetan decorated human skull caps, & Yamas - Tibetan decorated human skulls. While all the symbols refer to Tibetan Buddhism, they came out of China several years ago, and there is no easy way to know if they were made in China or Tibet. It is also not easy to know when they where made, but we would guess that they are not very old. Some of the symbols are inlaid in the skull with metal after which it is buffed and polished, some are carved into the bone, and the mandibles are secured onto the upper part of the skull at the TM joint unless otherwise noted" — By EMJ at 11:41 AM Wed

"That was the key demographic we were looking for," [head of the Berwyn Development Corp] told the Chicago Tribune. "Not the only demographic, but the key one." The Tribune noted that "[i]t has been well-established anecdotally and through academic research that an influx of gay or lesbian residents often boosts property values and can lead to improvements in the appearance of a community as well as the amenities it offers." — By John Napsterista at 8:20 AM Wed

Night Time Lapse of Fire West of Boulder (http://www.youtube.com/w)

It seriously looks like you're staring into Hell. Dozens of structures lost, most of those probably homes. 3500 people evacuated so far. Thousands of acres burned. It's a bad situation that we folk of Colorado know to expect, but it surprises every time just how awesome (in the "awe" sense of the word) nature is. Also, one speculated cause is a collision with an RV and a propane tank, which is epic. No reports of injuries or fatalities (yay!). (Also I wasn't sure what category to put this in--time lapse=art, fire=nature...so I just put science and called it a day.) — By Annibal at 5:59 PM Tue
